LED Light-Guided Picking System Provides Safety Measures in Critical Applications

El Segundo,CA - January 03, 2007

DDP, a leader in engineered LED solutions, has developed LED systems specifically designed for light-guided picking applications. The light-guided picking systems utilize LED indicator modules mounted to shelving, flow rack, work benches, pallet rack or other storage locations to help reduce the risk of errors and improve throughput in a variety of applications.

DDP has already delivered such lamp assemblies for the pharmaceutical industry. When a pharmacist needs a specific drug to fill a prescription, they can scan a prescription into their computer, which interprets the information and activates the correct LEDs, indicating where the appropriate drugs are stored. Both the storage drawer and the storage bin light up, significantly reducing the chance for human-error in this critical application. A sensor on the back of the drawer relays to the computer that the correct drawer has been accessed, resetting the system for the next entry.

"Any manual process is a source of potential errors and quality lapses. Even the most conscientious operator is prone to mistakes, particularly when products look similar, the wrong part can easily be selected. Light-guided picking is essential for critical applications prone to human-error,” said Tony Toniolo, DDP President. “In other applications such as warehousing, light-guided picking can increase efficiency and productivity by enabling an employee to look for indication lights instead of searching for labels on the side of the containers. Light-guided picking helps facilitate a lean work environment."

DDP's LED Light-guided picking systems can be designed for any rack or shelving unit and come in a wide selection of hardware and software configurations. They can be used on static shelving or automated carousel systems. The technology evolved from the warehousing and distribution industry, where it is widely used. The paperless, light-directed order fulfillment systems utilize wireless technology via remote control — transmitting at 418MHz - to direct order pickers to the right pick locations. DDP light guided picking solutions are available in a wide variety of custom configurations.
